Our Positive Behaviour Support Process

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Our PBS services are built on respect, dignity, and collaboration. We work alongside participants and their support networks to better understand the factors influencing behaviours and identify strategies that promote wellbeing, communication, inclusion, and personal growth. By focusing on strengths and individual goals, we help create supportive environments that encourage positive change and enhance everyday life.

Together, we develop practical and sustainable solutions that empower participants to achieve greater independence, strengthen relationships, and participate more confidently in their communities.

Supporting Individuals Through Positive Behaviour Support

We support individuals who may experience behaviours of concern that impact their wellbeing, relationships, daily participation, or safety. These behaviours can often be linked to communication difficulties, unmet needs, emotional regulation challenges, environmental factors, or underlying disabilities and conditions.

We work with individuals who may have:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Neurological and cognitive disabilities
  • Dual diagnosis and complex support needs
  • Communication and emotional regulation difficulties

If you are looking for Positive Behaviour Support services, our team is here to help support participants, families, carers, and support teams with practical and compassionate approaches.

How a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner Can Help

Our Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners work closely with participants, families, carers, educators, and support teams to better understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern and identify meaningful supports.

We focus on:

  • Understanding triggers and unmet needs
  • Building communication and daily living skills
  • Increasing independence and participation
  • Improving emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Creating supportive and consistent environments

Using a collaborative and evidence-based approach, we develop practical Behaviour Support Plans that can be implemented across home, school, community, and supported living settings.

At JARA Support Network, we provide person-centred Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) tailored to each participant’s needs, goals, and support environment.

1. Interim Behaviour Support Plan

Timeframe: Within 1 month of service commencement

If restrictive practices are currently in place, an Interim Behaviour Support Plan is developed to ensure immediate support and legal compliance while further assessment is completed.

This plan may include:

  • Initial understanding of behaviours of concern
  • Immediate risk and safety strategies
  • Early positive support approaches
  • Recommendations to support consistency across environments

2. Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)

Timeframe: Completed within 6 months of service commencement

A Functional Behaviour Assessment is completed to better understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern and the participant’s support needs.

This process may include:

  • Observations and data collection
  • Meetings with the participant, family, carers, and support team
  • Identifying triggers, patterns, and environmental factors
  • Understanding the function and purpose of behaviours

The assessment findings guide the development of the Behaviour Support Plan.

3. Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan

Timeframe: Finalised within 6 months of service commencement

A personalised Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan is developed based on assessment findings and participant goals.

The plan may include:

  • Proactive and preventative strategies
  • Reactive and safety strategies
  • Skill development and communication supports
  • Environmental and routine adjustments
  • Strategies to reduce or eliminate restrictive practices
  • Clear guidance for families, carers, educators, and support staff

4. Ongoing Implementation & Support

Our PBS practitioner works closely with the participant and support team to ensure strategies are implemented consistently and effectively.

Support may include:

  • Training and coaching for carers and support workers
  • Collaboration with schools and allied health professionals
  • Visual supports and structured routines
  • Regular monitoring, review, and adjustments

5. Progress Reporting & Plan Review

Timeframe: Usually completed 6–12 weeks before the participant’s NDIS plan review

Progress reports are completed to track outcomes and support future funding recommendations.

Reports may include:

  • Progress toward participant goals
  • Outcomes of strategies implemented
  • Recommendations for ongoing supports
  • Updates to Behaviour Support Plans where required
